James Alcock

Born in Lancashire and now based in Glasgow, James has been making compelling and diverse video content since graduating from the University of Glasgow in 2002.
He won the BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Documentary with his debut film Ceiling Man (2002) and went on to direct The Song of the Earth (2003) and Jessie M. King: The Dream-maker (2003) for Border Television’s arts series Border Greats.
In 2004 he set up Corruption Films with cameraman and photojournalist Simon Hipkins. Together they produced Crude Progress (2004) for Scottish Television’s creative strand This Scotland and The Glen Cinema Disaster (2005) for BBC Scotland and the History Channel.
In 2006 James was selected by West Lothian Council to be film-maker-in residence at a day centre for Alzheimer patients where he made Of Mind and Matter (2006). In the same year James filmed, edited and produced The Dirty Digger (2007) for BBC Scotland’s Storyline series, collaborating with acclaimed documentary-maker David Graham Scott. Soon after, James established James Alcock Films. His first commission Reel Life (2007) was to make a documentary with teenagers who had been caught up in drink, drugs and homelessness.
James collaborated again with David Graham Scott in 2008 on the first chapter of the ten-part feature documentary The New Ten Commandments (2008). The film premiered at the 2008 Edinburgh International Film Festival and featured contributions from Tilda Swinton, Irvine Welsh and Douglas Gordon.
In 2009 James produced, shot and edited Arcadia (2009) a documentary for Bridging the Gap. It was screened at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and broadcast on BBC Scotland. It is currently playing at film festivals throughout the world.
In addition to producing creative content, James also contributes to a variety of other projects including commercial videos, live events, outreach projects and training. Recent clients include Irvine Bay Regeneration Company, Event Scotland, Riverside Inverclyde, Rettie & Co and The Scottish Green Party.
